Lake District Moods.
The autumn weather in the Lake District was typically moody this week, changing constantly with high winds and driving rain at times then short dry spells that allowed an occasional photo without getting the camera soaked. This is looking south to the head of Ullswater from the western shoreline during a brief lull in the rain with Hartsop Dodd in the distance.

The Queens Hotel is built on the site of Field House Meadow.

The plot of land which is now car parking at the entrance to the building (in the bottom left corner of this view) is where the Roman Field House once stood.

This Field House was part of a series of Roman constructions in this immediate vicinity dating from 43 AD.

I bet they would have been horrified by the sight of the pier!

20061021 6558...French-speaking cyclists above Jackson Hole

Moab's mountain-biking trails attract cyclists from all over the world. These men were speaking French. They are taking a break on a section of the Amasa Back Trail called "Cliffhanger." Just beyond the bikes is an afterlife-enabling drop of about 400 feet (122m) into a rincon named "Jackson Hole." Th goal of my hike was a mesa in Jackson Hole called "Jacson Butte," whose shadow is visible at far left. A rough trail descends a rocky gully to the Hole.

Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole, originally called Jackson's Hole, is a valley located in the west-central U.S. state of Wyoming. The name "hole" derives from language used by early trappers or mountain men, who primarily entered the valley from the north and east and had to descend along relatively steep slopes, giving the sensation of entering a hole. These low-lying valleys surrounded by mountains contain rivers and streams, were good habitat for beaver and other fur-bearing animals.
